• The protocols necessary to successfully incorporate double exercises into detection dog training.
• The benefits for the detection dog and handler of double blind exercises.
• Pitfalls to avoid when setting up double blind exercises.
• Logistics needed for implementing a double blind exercise for detection canines.

Description
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Detective Fred Helfers (retired) Owner /Trainer, Canine Detection Services LLC (since 1984)
Fred Helfers served 25 years as a police officer in Washington state, working as a Narcotics detective for 22 years. During this time Fred worked and trained two personal drug detection canines and operated a detection dog training facility for over 20 years. Fred began training drug detection canines in 1982. Over the past 42 years, he has enhanced his expertise by training both canines and handlers for detecting drugs, insects, natural gas, spoiled products, accelerants and sports detection. His extensive knowledge in training detection canine teams has enabled him to regularly conduct K9 training seminars and workshops internationally. Fred is a past President of the Washington State Police Canine Association and founding President of the Pacific Northwest Police Detection Dog Association (pnwk9.org). In 2011, he designed and authored double-blind certifications for police drug detection canine teams. Paper published 2026 (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2589871X2600001X) Fred Helfers is also a published author on detection dogs (“The Nosework Handler” – available in English and Danish) and the inventor of a patented scent-based training system. In 2005 he was appointed a founding member of the Scientific Working Group on Dog and Orthogonal Factors (SWGDOG.org) and served as a member of the Organization of Scientific Area Committee (OSAC – Dogs and Sensors subcommittee) from 2014 to 2024 (retired). Fred is also recognized as an instructor, Judge and Certifying Official (ORT) for NACSW. (2012)
