As dogs engage in scent work their brain function and structure are altering in response, as various competing intended and unintended stimuli are encountered. These changes can be both immediate and delayed, both temporary and permanent, and are influenced by various environmental and internal factors. The same is true of all canine disciplines but scentwork is special. In this talk the dynamic interplay between scentwork, attentional processing and emotional wellbeing will be explored. Understanding this interplay helps us understand how to set the brain up for success, and what might be running the show when things don’t go according to plan.

Dr Kathy Murphy is a veterinary surgeon (1999 Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) and neuroscientist (PhD University of Oxford / Assistant Professorship Icahn School of Medicine NYC), with an interest in canine scentwork. She is the Director of Barking Brains, a neuroscience outreach project for the animal behaviour and training community and has a passion for making science accessible and relevant for non-scientists. She has fostered and rehabilitated many dogs over the years and currently shares her home with Nancy (Rottweiler), Raven (Malinois), Dennis (Chihuahua x Yorkshire) and Minnie (Chihuahua).
